In the interview, he discussed his motivation for founding the Youth Development Foundation (YDF) in Pakistan. YDF is a non-governmental organisation dedicated to tearing down socio-cultural, religious, and communal barriers through a youth-led movement.

Rehmat faced discrimination as a member of Pakistan’s Christian minority while working at a multinational telecom company. Tackling the discrimination forced Rehmat to think about issues of diversity, and motivated him to begin working on fostering intercultural dialogue.

Now, through his work at the YDF and World Faith Lahore, Rehmat aims to enable young people to engage in conversations about diversity. By spreading awareness of the background of Pakistan’s religious conflict and building understanding of Pakistan’s religious diversity, Rehmat mobilizes Pakistan’s youth.

At World Faith Lahore, Rehmat directs the POWER Programme. The POWER Programme utilizes the support of young interfaith volunteers to empower Pakistani women by giving them the opportunity to improve their reading, writing, and business skills. Rehmat uniquely combines two of World Faith’s core missions – building interfaith tolerance and empowering women – through the POWER Programme.

The full interview with Rehmat can be found here: https://www.ifa.de/en/themes/culture-and-conflict/religious-tolerance-for-peace-building-in-pakistan.html

The Programme of Women’s Empowerment and Reform mobilizes interfaith volunteers, who together give marginalized women the opportunity to improve their basic reading, writing, and business skills. The ability given to these women helps them create a better future for themselves and their families. In previous years, we have seen participants of the P.O.W.E.R Programme feel more confident in themselves and make strides toward equality in their country. Thank you to everyone who helped make this happen!

Maria has joined the New York office to offer logistical support to World Faith programming, including Chapter communication, impact reporting and analysis, and long-term visioning. Originally from Denmark, Maria trained as a lawyer in the United Kingdom and worked for a number of years in London, representing asylum seekers and refugees in their claims for protection. In 2012 she moved to Singapore with her family, where she completed a Masters degree in International Law.

After four years in Asia she relocated once more, this time to New York City. Here Maria found herself searching for new opportunities, and with a desire to gain experience in the non-profit sector. This eventually led to an introduction to World Faith, where she is now learning the ropes and getting to know the people and the organisation.

Human rights and social justice have been cornerstones of both her studies and employment to date, and she to hopes to make a significant and positive contribution to the mission of World Faith.

Maria currently lives on the Upper West Side of Manhattan with her husband, two kids, a dog, a cat, and a bearded dragon!

World Faith Lahore has completed another successful session of the POWER Programme, empowering marginalized women by teaching them basic reading, writing and small business skills, as well as connecting them with microcredit organizations to start their small level business. Here some of the recent graduates share how the program has benefitted them and their families:

It was embarrassing for me, when my kids asked me to check their school homework, because, I was unable to read Urdu and even digits / counting. Due to POWER project six months classes, now I can read basic Urdu and pay our utilities by visiting bank personally. This course gave me knowledge, courage and confidence.” – Kiran Laba

I am planning to start my own grocery store with the help of loan from bank. I am thankful to the POWER team, for providing me an opportunity to learn basic arithmetic skills and formulas” – Sobia Nazir

Six months ago, I was struggling to study the bible, with the help of POWER course, now I can read the bible easily and communicate with my husband and family through messaging service using smartphone.” –Maria Mushtaq

Well done World Faith Lahore, keep up the great work!

One of their recent projects aimed to generate interest and build capacity of youth and women group leaders to fully understand issues of extractive mining, legislative, policies and institutional frameworks that govern the mining sector in Malawi. This was achieved through a day long capacity building training workshop, attended by 50 men, women and youth from the Kaseghe, Chisi, Mwanjasi, Mwenelondo communities in Karonga District.

During the workshop climate change science was discussed, including causes, impacts and what communities should do to mitigate this. The participants also discussed extractive mining issues focusing on practices, legislation, community involvement, participation, benefits, as well as transparency and accountability. They also considered practices that are fuelling environmental degradation and the extent to which mining poses a threat to the environment and human health.

At the end of the workshop most of the leaders were convinced and motivated to getting involved in community level programming through local governance structures. They were keen to take action to collectively voice their concerns on matters that affect them. Generally, youth and women leaders increased their capacity, understanding and their need to respond and act on mining and emerging conversations at all level. The project was achieved through partnership and collaboration with Karonga Catholic for Justice and Peace (CCJP) and Karonga Civil Society Network, who provided the technical support needed to make the implementation of the project.  Great work Dominic and World Faith Malawi!
