Mothers of today are in a unique position as they educate, engage and empower children to find hope and peace in a world where there is too much hurt and hate, according to Soraya Deen, president and founder of Peacewrks, a center for compassionate communication and conflict resolution.

“There will be wars, there will be violence, there will be hate in our world,” said Deen of Tarzana, a native of Sri Lanka. “What is important is what we stand for. I stand for understanding and being a force for peace. I speak as a mother of two young children — we must all jog ourselves to move from peace seeking to peacemaking. The urgency is now.”

On Wednesday, Deen will be the guest speaker at the Center for Spiritual Living in Westlake Village. The interfaith dialogue will include discussions on being Muslim in America, as well as Martin Luther King Jr.’s approach to nonviolence and peace.
