OPELOUSAS — In an effort to foster better race relation in Opelousas and across Acadiana, an effort is under way to create an interfaith “human relations council,” the Rev. Walton Dunbar told the Opelousas Board of Aldermen on Tuesday night.

Organizers are seeking the endorsement of the board for the new committee, he said.

Dunbar, a United Methodist pastor and Opelousas resident outlined the group’s mission aimed at creating greater community unity among people of all races and religious faiths. Dunbar borrowed from Martin Luther King, Jr.’s famous 1963 “I Have A Dream” speech in his presentation.

“This group will be a committee of like minded citizens that will be biracial, bi-ethnic, interfaith-Jews, Protestants, Catholics as well as non-Christian faiths, whatever-with the purpose of addressing and ‘transform(ing)’ the still ‘jangling discords of our’ Opelousas/St. Landry Parish/Acadiana community ‘into a beautiful symphony of brother(/sister)hood,’ ” Dunbar told the governing board.
